DEPT. OF ART CRITICISM

Beyond Tribal Formalism

Copyright 2015 by S. W. Paul Wyszkowski

"Bosh and farrago! Silly twittery!" says Prickles with conviction. What? "Tribal formalism! Really!" Well, it describes fairly accurately the core and crust of much of Art criticism. "Hah!" she says. Look, what Art critics are qualified to do is to analyse how the Art Object in question conforms to their particular cutural tribe's definition of Art. The better Art critics are multicultural, offering more than one point of view. But the very best Art critics, and there are mighty few of those, simply, and as accurately as vernacular language allows, report their personal, idiosyncratic emotional and intellectual response to a work of Art. That's what I mean by "beyond tribal formalism". "Oh." she says.
